Surah Al-Baqarah – Verse 39 --- Arabic: وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ --- Transliteration: Wa alladhīna kafarū wa kadhdhabū bi-āyātinā, ulā’ika aṣḥābun-nār, hum fīhā khālidūn. --- Translation (Sahih International): “But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs – they are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.” --- Explanation / Tafsir: This verse concludes the story of Prophet Adam (عليه السلام) and the guidance Allah sent to humanity after his descent to Earth (from verses 30–39). In the previous verse (2:38), Allah promised that whoever follows His guidance will be free from fear and sorrow. Now, in verse 39, Allah explains the opposite — the fate of those who reject that guidance. --- 1. “But those who disbelieve…” This refers to people who deny the truth after it has become clear to them. They reject faith in Allah, His messengers, and His revelation out of arrogance, pride, or negligence. --- 2. “…and deny Our signs…” “Āyātinā” (Our signs) includes: The verses of the Qur’an (divine revelation). The miracles shown through prophets. The signs in creation that point to Allah’s existence and power. Rejecting or mocking these signs is not just disbelief but also ingratitude for Allah’s guidance. --- 3. “…they are the companions of the Fire…” Those who deliberately turn away from Allah’s message will be among the companions of Hell (Aṣḥābun-Nār) — meaning they will live there permanently as their place of residence. The word “companions” (aṣḥāb) shows closeness and permanence — it’s not a temporary stay but an eternal companionship. --- 4. “…they will abide therein eternally.” This emphasizes that their punishment is forever, because their rejection was intentional and persistent. They chose to close their hearts to the truth even when it was made clear. Eternal punishment is for those who die in disbelief after the truth reached them — not for those who were ignorant or never received the message. --- Lessons and Reflections: 1. Guidance and misguidance are by choice. Allah has shown both the path of truth and falsehood. It’s up to each person to follow the right way. 2. Disbelief has consequences. Just as belief brings peace and salvation, disbelief leads to loss and punishment. 3. Allah is just. No one will be punished without evidence and opportunity for guidance. 4. Faith and obedience protect from Hell. Following divine guidance brings eternal success. --- Summary: Those who reject faith and deny Allah’s signs after knowing the truth will be companions of Hell, staying there forever. This verse completes the contrast between those who follow Allah’s guidance (rewarded with peace) and those who reject it (punished eternally).
