Folklore Gunungkidul

In ancient times, a fierce battle broke out in the Majapahit kingdom, forcing the royal family to flee for safety. At that time, the area now known as Gunungkidul was still a wilderness, part of the Sewu Mountains. Linguistically, Gunungkidul means "mountain in the south." Legend has it that it was opened by a refugee from Majapahit following a major war. A mighty, dignified man, he was Raden Dewa Katong. This is the folktale "The Origins of Gunung Kidul."
