What is a negative prompt?

A negative prompt is a second instruction that tells a generative AI model what to leave out of an image or video, such as blur, distorted hands, on-screen text or watermarks. Rather than describing the result, it lists unwanted features, and the model steers its generation away from them.
How does a negative prompt work?
In diffusion models, each denoising step is nudged toward what the main prompt describes. A negative prompt adds a push in the opposite direction, away from the features it lists. The strength of both pushes is usually set by a guidance scale: higher values follow the prompts more strictly, sometimes at the cost of natural-looking results.
Common negative prompt examples
Negative prompts work best as short lists of concrete visual problems:
- Image quality: blurry, low resolution, grainy, overexposed
- Anatomy: extra fingers, distorted hands, deformed face
- Artifacts: watermark, logo, on-screen text, subtitles
- Motion: flicker, jitter, warping, sudden cuts
When there is no negative prompt field
Many newer video models, and many tools built on them, have no separate negative prompt, AITube's generator included today. In that case, phrase the exclusion positively in the main prompt: 'a static, locked-off camera' instead of 'no camera shake', or 'a clean frame with no on-screen text'. Describing what you want usually works better than naming what you don't.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my negative prompt being ignored?
The model may not support negative prompts, the guidance strength may be low, or the negative prompt may conflict with the main prompt. If the main prompt implies something, a negative prompt rarely overrides it.
Can a negative prompt remove a watermark from a video?
No. A negative prompt only influences what a model generates. It can make watermark-like artifacts less likely in new output, but it cannot edit an existing video.
Do all AI video models support negative prompts?
No. Support depends on the model and on whether the tool exposes it. When it is not available, rephrase exclusions as positive descriptions in the main prompt.
