What is text-to-video?

AITube Glossary · Updated

Text-to-video is generative AI that turns a written description, called a prompt, into a video clip. A model trained on huge amounts of captioned video generates frames that match the prompt's subject, action, setting and style, usually a few seconds at a time, which creators then combine into longer videos.

How does text-to-video work?

Most current text-to-video models are diffusion models. Generation starts from random noise, and the model removes that noise step by step, guided by an encoded version of your prompt, until frames that match the description emerge.

To keep the work manageable, models usually operate on a compressed representation of the video rather than on raw pixels, and they generate all the frames of a clip together. Generating frames jointly is what lets a character keep the same face and a camera move smoothly from start to finish.

How to write a good text-to-video prompt

Models respond best to concrete, visual language. Describe what a camera would see, not what a viewer should feel.

  • Subject and action: who or what is on screen, doing one clear thing
  • Setting: place, time of day and weather
  • Camera: shot size and movement, such as a close-up or a slow push-in
  • Light and style: golden hour, neon, documentary, anime, claymation
  • Pace: one main action per clip; split a sequence into several clips

What are the limits of text-to-video?

Clips are short, so longer stories are built scene by scene. Readable text on signs, hands, fast or complex physics, and keeping a character identical across separate clips are still common weak points. Cost also scales with length and resolution, because every second of video takes significant computing time to generate.

Text-to-video vs image-to-video

Text-to-video starts from words alone. Image-to-video starts from a still image used as the first frame and animates it, which gives tighter control over the look at the cost of an extra step. Many creators design a frame first, then animate it.

How to make a text-to-video clip on AITube

In AITube's AI Studio you write a prompt, choose an AI video model and generate a clip, then publish it to your channel. Generation uses credits, and the cost depends on the model and length you pick. To turn one idea into a complete vertical Short, with scenes, voiceover and captions, use StoryShort.

Frequently asked questions

Is text-to-video free?

Generating video takes expensive computing time, so most tools charge per generation, usually through credits. On AITube, joining, watching and publishing are free, and generating video uses credits from a subscription or a one-time credit pack.

How long can a text-to-video clip be?

Most models generate a few seconds per clip, commonly 5 to 10. Longer videos are made by generating several clips and putting them together, which is what StoryShort does scene by scene.

Can I post AI-generated videos on YouTube?

Yes. YouTube allows AI-generated videos but asks creators to disclose realistic altered or synthetic content that viewers could mistake for real footage. Original, clearly creative AI work is welcome there and on AITube, which is built for AI video.
