What is temporal consistency in AI video?
AITube Glossary · Updated
Temporal consistency is how stable an AI video stays from one frame to the next: a character keeps the same face and clothes, objects don't flicker or change shape, and motion follows the scene's physics. Poor temporal consistency shows up as flicker, shifting details and things that appear or vanish.
Why AI video struggles with consistency
A generated clip is built from noise, not filmed, so nothing guarantees that the jacket in frame 40 matches the jacket in frame 1. Video models share information across frames to keep them aligned, but the longer the clip and the busier the scene, the more opportunities there are for details to drift.
What affects temporal consistency
- Clip length: longer single generations drift more
- Motion: fast action and quick camera moves are harder to keep stable
- Scene complexity: crowds and many small objects multiply errors
- Prompt clarity: vague or conflicting descriptions invite changes
- Model: newer, larger models generally hold identity and detail better
How to get more consistent AI video
Generate short clips with one clear action, favor slower camera movement, and describe recurring characters with the same exact words in every scene. Use your strongest model for the shots that matter most, and cut between clips rather than asking one generation to cover a whole sequence.
Consistency across scenes
Within a clip, consistency is the model's job; across clips, it is yours. Multi-scene videos, like an AI Short or a recurring series, stay coherent when each scene repeats the same character description, setting and style. StoryShort builds Shorts scene by scene from one story, which keeps those descriptions aligned.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between temporal consistency and motion coherence?
They overlap. Temporal consistency is about things staying the same over time, such as identity, clothing and lighting. Motion coherence is about movement looking smooth and believable from frame to frame.
Does frame interpolation fix flickering?
Only partly. Frame interpolation adds in-between frames to smooth motion and raise the frame rate, but it cannot fix a face or object that changes between frames.
Why does my AI character look different in every clip?
Each generation starts fresh and has no memory of earlier clips. Reuse an identical, detailed character description in every prompt, and keep the style and setting wording the same.
