Birth in Ayodhya: King Dasharatha of Kosala performs a sacred fire sacrifice (putrakameshti yajna) to beget an heir. As a result, four sons are born to his three queens: Rama (to Kausalya, regarded as an avatar of Lord Vishnu), Bharata (to Kaikeyi), and the twins Lakshmana and Shatrughna (to Sumitra). Training and Protection of Sages: In their youth, the princes are trained in martial arts and philosophy by the sage Vishwamitra. The sage visits Ayodhya and asks Dasharatha to send Rama and Lakshmana to his hermitage to protect sacred rituals from being disrupted by powerful demons (rakshasas), specifically Maricha and Subahu. During this mission, Rama demonstrates exceptional righteousness and divine strength. The Grand Wedding: Following this feat, a magnificent wedding takes place in Mithila, uniting Rama and Sita. Simultaneously, Sita's sister Urmila marries Lakshmana, and other cousins marry Janaka's nieces, cementing an alliance between Ayodhya and Mithila. Kaikeyi's Demands: Prompted by her maid Manthara, Queen Kaikeyi invokes two boons granted to her by King Dasharatha in the past. She demands that Bharata be crowned king instead, and that Rama be sent into exile in the forest for fourteen years. The Departure: Bound by his word and royal honor, Dasharatha is heartbroken. Demonstrating supreme duty (dharma), Rama accepts the decree without bitterness to uphold his father’s promise. Panchavati: Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana spend years journeying through deep forests, visiting sages, and protecting holy ascetics from demonic forces. They eventually establish a peaceful hermitage along the Godavari River in Panchavati. Shurpanakha's Encounter: The demoness Shurpanakha encounters the princes and attempts to seduce Rama and kill Sita. In defense, Lakshmana mutilates her by cutting off her nose and ears. The Golden Deception: Seeking revenge, Shurpanakha flees to her brother, the powerful demon king Ravana of Lanka, describing Sita's unmatched beauty. Ravana devises a plot: the demon Maricha transforms into a dazzling golden deer to capture Sita's attention. Charmed by the creature, Sita asks Rama to retrieve it for her. The Abduction: While Rama and Lakshmana are drawn away from the hermitage, Ravana approaches the hut disguised as a wandering ascetic (sadhu). When Sita steps forward to offer him traditional hospitality, Ravana reveals his true identity, forces her into his flying chariot (Pushpak Viman), and abducts her across the ocean to Lanka. The Fall of Jatayu: The noble vulture king Jatayu witnesses the kidnapping and fiercely fights Ravana in mid-air to rescue Sita, but is mortally wounded by the demon king.
